Three musketeers

Three tiger cubs and their mother — one resting beneath an ancient tree, two tumbling nearby — caught in the most ordinary and most extraordinary moment of wild life: simply being together. Part photographic truth, part pure imagination. Sofia Shireen does not merely transcribe nature. She composes it, drawing from her own field observations and weaving them into a scene that feels at once documentary and dreamed. Three Musketeers is joyful. Among Sofia Shireen's wildlife works — which often carry solitude, tension or fleeting drama — this one simply celebrates. A family, intact, in their world, on an ordinary afternoon that will never come again.

The result has the quality of a beloved natural history illustration — the kind found in a cherished old book, where every leaf and fern is named, where the world is rendered with love rather than haste. There is a timelessness to it. It could belong to any century.

The ink linework is patient and deeply pleasurable — each tiger stripe drawn individually, the tree bark built up in layered hatching, the grass suggested in sweeping confident strokes. Markers add warmth — the burnt orange of the tigers glowing against the cool blue-grey of the clouded sky. Pencil softens where softness is needed.

It is a technique that rewards looking closely. The longer you look, the more you find.
