Tadoba's Heartbeat

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra

At the water's edge, time holds its breath.

A tigress bends to drink, her great striped body arching forward with a power that is utterly unhurried — she knows this forest, this waterhole, this moment. Pressed close around her, four cubs mirror her posture, their small faces alert and watchful, learning everything simply by being near her. This is the heartbeat of Tadoba — not the dramatic chase, not the roar, but this quiet, fierce, tender gathering at the water.

The draughtsmanship is exceptional. Ink linework defines the tigress with confidence and authority — every stripe placed with understanding of the musculature beneath, the weight of the haunches, the precision of those enormous paws at the waterline. The cubs are rendered with equal care, their smaller, rounder forms full of the clumsy earnestness of youth. Marker washes flood the coat in rich burnt amber and deep ochre, the black stripes applied in bold, assured ink over the top, the whole family glowing warmly against the cool greens and muted rose tones of the forest waterhole.

The surrounding detail rewards a long, slow look. Butterflies drift above a fallen log. Water lily pads float serenely in the foreground, a jacana picking its way delicately among them — the rest of the jungle quietly, wisely carrying on around this most powerful of families.

The composition breathes. The white of the archival paper is used with great intelligence — sky and water left luminous and open, drawing all attention to the tigress and her cubs at the centre.

Intimate, majestic and deeply felt — Tadoba's Heartbeat is a tribute to the wild heart of central India, and to the most important relationship in the forest.
