On a dusty forest track in the heart of Pench, a tigress and her teenage cubs have claimed the afternoon as entirely their own. Artwork captures this with the loose, luminous confidence that acrylic in skilled hands allows — the forest rendered in bold, gestural strokes of teal, olive, jade and pale grey, light filtering through the canopy in the way it only does in the deep Indian jungle at midday. The tigers sprawl and sit across the track with the easy ownership of those who have never been told to move, amber and black against the warm terracotta earth. The tigress watches. One cub lolls. The third holds its ground with the particular stillness of adolescence — alert, assessing, not quite sure yet what it is becoming. Painted from photographs taken on safari, this is a work that carries the heat and the stillness of that moment — the held breath of a jeep that has just rounded a bend and found, unexpectedly, a whole family waiting
