Gentle

On rough, textured paper the colour of stone and earth, a mother elephant moves forward with her calf tucked beneath her — small, sure, sheltered. . The texture of the paper becomes the texture of dry savannah earth itself, the two figures emerging from it as if they have always been part of the ground they walk on. The mother is rendered in sweeping, confident strokes — her bulk suggested rather than laboured, her movement unhurried. The calf below is barely formed, just enough marks to say here, safe, close. That is all that needs saying. Gentle is exactly that — not soft, not sentimental, but deeply, quietly tender in the way that only great strength can be.
