He does not invite you closer. This is a creature that has claimed his ground and makes no apology for it.

Painted from life at Colchester Zoo, this cockerel commands the canvas with an almost unsettling authority. Chest thrust forward, weight shifted deliberately onto one powerful leg, head angled with sharp, watchful intensity — every inch of him radiates territorial pride and barely contained ferocity. That small, fierce eye misses nothing.

Yet it is the colour that delivers the true force of his character. Rather than softening him, the explosive palette — crimson slashing across his breast, deep cobalt and emerald in his tail, ochre and teal crackling through his plumage — amplifies his danger. These are not decorative colours; they are warning colours. Nature's way of saying do not test me. The oil pastel is applied with matching aggression — thick, urgent strokes that follow the thrust of feather and muscle, building a surface as restless and charged as the bird himself.

The background offers no relief — bold, fractured slabs of red, grey and yellow pulse around him, the world itself seemingly agitated by his presence. There is no safe distance in this composition.
