Drawing, sketching, and a little bit of magic — Sofia Art Gallery opens its doors for grown-up art nights

Forget the hustle of the week. At Sofia Art Gallery, Wednesday and Thursday evenings smell faintly of graphite and fresh flowers — and that's entirely by design.

The gallery has launched a series of adult workshops centred on two of the most timeless subjects in art: botanical illustration and still life drawing. Open to complete beginners and seasoned sketchers alike, these sessions are less about perfection and more about the quiet pleasure of really looking at something — a peony in full bloom, a weathered ceramic jug, a cluster of lemons catching the light.

What to Expect

Participants arrive to find a warm, unhurried space — soft lighting, carefully arranged easels, and a central display of the evening's subject: perhaps trailing eucalyptus and dried seed pods for a botanical session, or a lovingly assembled tableau of glass bottles, fruit, and draped cloth for still life.

There's no rigid syllabus. The gallery's resident artists and tutors move gently around the room, offering encouragement, the occasional technique tip, and the reassurance that every mark on the page has value. Whether you work in pencil, charcoal, ink, or watercolour, the tools are yours to explore.

"We wanted to create an evening where adults could switch off and simply enjoy the act of making," says the team at Sofia. "No deadlines, no judgment — just art."

Botanical Nights

The botanical workshops have quickly become a favourite. Participants work from live specimens — seasonal flowers, herbs, leaves, and stems arranged in small vases on each desk. The focus is on observation: tracing the curl of a petal, mapping the network of veins on a leaf, capturing the particular green of a stem just cut from the garden. It's meditative, absorbing, and surprisingly joyful.

Still Life Evenings

The still life sessions invite artists to engage with light and shadow, form and texture. Arrangements change each week — one evening might feature a classical stack of books beside a candle; another, something more playful, like vintage toys or market produce. The variety keeps things fresh and encourages participants to keep coming back.

A Community of Creatives

What many attendees didn't expect was the sense of community. By the end of an evening, tables are scattered with work, conversation flows easily, and strangers have become studio companions. The gallery provides all materials, so there's nothing to bring but yourself — and perhaps a friend.
